everyone is going off about how zoom + other platforms aren't privacy respecting software but nobody is getting at the fact that free and open software is the only software that respects your agency and isn't made to turn you into a commodity. (thread)
by definition it is built cooperatively to serve user needs and for a specific use value rather than its monetary value. if we are ever to build a view of socialist production in the quaternary economy, FOSS needs to be part of it (2/?)
there are definitely people out there who are trying to come up with a political economy of peer production and the pol. implications of copyleft but FOSS projects face an existential threat from tech firms and by the complex world of licensing (3/?)
another internet--federated, free, user-controlled and produced--is within reach. there's no good reason to let the capitalistic mode of production seep into this part of society more than it already has. (4/?)
consider being conscious about the tech you use and what tech you're willing to find acceptable. FOSS can/should be part of praxis in a world becoming ever more deeply dependent on tech (5)
