If apocalypse talk stresses you out, go ahead and bypass this thread, but for those interested, I checked the Bible I use for spellcasting just to see where we're at...
Revelations 15 and 16 talk about the seven angels of wrath, the seven plagues and the seven bowls. (See the sections highlighted in the pics or Google for the full text as I can't fit it all into image alt text for screenreaders here on Twitter.)
I feel like most people focus on the Four Horsemen, which I think is because it's more popular/common "end of days" imagery, but I feel the Seven Angels are more relevant:
(Before I get started, this thread is NOT designed to scare anyone, nor am I saying we are experiencing the wrath of God right now. I'm saying there are parallels and talking about it can help some people or serve as a mindful distraction, which is healthy for some.)
(However if this is a stressful concept for you, please don't go through the rest of this thread as I really don't want anyone to plunge into despair or experience theological distress. This thread is for people like me who relax by thinking about this kind of stuff.)
Okay, so the text in the images above once again are the relevant sections, but we'll start from Rev 15:7, "Then one of the 4 living creatures gave to the 7 angels 7 golden bowls filled with the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever."
The 1st angel, affecting land (crops), causes welts on those who had the "mark of the beast". I relate this to a thing that was around when I was a kid, that barcodes were the "mark of the beast" and this is a burn on capitalism; the system has been collapsing for decades.
The second angel, affecting the seas, kills all living things in all the oceans. We have been in a climate crisis and marine ecological crisis for a long time, now.
The third angel affects the rivers, which became blood, which represents essentially a call-out of the people for their harm of other people (an act against God inherently, as all made in his image are holy etc.) and is a punishment designed to illustrate this.
(I take the third angel's wrath to be addressing the evils of war, acts of violence against anyone but particularly poor people, LGBTQIA+ people, all marginalised peoples, etc. but these are all just my interpretations)
The fourth angel, affecting the sun, causes a searing heat, which we can obviously relate to climate change and increasingly extended global fire seasons.
(Of note, the fourth angel's section specifically says that even though this was a universal not a local plague of wrath, people still did not repent. We are still not effectively addressing climate change...)
The fifth angel, affecting the "throne of the beast" and kingdom (Hell), ensuring no people were free of wrath. Tongues bitten in agony suggests not just the obvious, but could be thought of as being at a loss for words. Even Hell was overcome with a general sense of dread.
The sixth angel, affecting the great river (also meaning any great source of water, which is to mean source of sustenance and community), dried it up and made it into a new path to Armageddon, where demons then assembled the kings.
(I think we can safely compare kings being led by demons to a fair number of politicians currently... Leaders blinded by evil making way to destruction.)
The seventh and final angel pours his bowl into the air, causing earthquakes and heralding in the splitting of land, severe and abnormal weather, the collapse of nations.
We could compare that to the fact that there have been several earthquakes in the USA recently, yet again climate change themes, and collapse of nations is pretty much something we're all watching in real time right now.
So again, I'm not trying to scare anyone or be a downer or whatever, I just personally relax by looking to the past and to influential texts and taking note of similarities or parallels like this. I'm not a Biblical scholar, just a witch who reads a lot.
I hope this was interesting for someone else out there to think about, if anyone has any other takes/interpretations feel free to share, and I really hope this thread is a source of distraction rather than any upset.
