One of my favorite people made some noise today in the social media space with a new series and y& #39;all KNOW how much I love a good edu-tainment thread chock full of facts and research, so let& #39;s dive in.
Will Smith has only been on social media for three years and has already debuted his third show (& #39;Will Smith& #39;s Bucket List& #39; for FB and & #39;Will Smith: The Jump,& #39; on YT) in partnership with another platform today. & #39;Will From Home& #39; is his latest series with Snapchat.
The 12-episode order will stream Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and will show Will in conversations with his family, celebrity guests and everyday folks about how they& #39;re practicing social distancing and abiding by stay at home orders -- all from his home set up in his garage.
A partnership between a 51-year-old Will and Snapchat may seem like an odd pairing when you look at the platform& #39;s demographic. 90% of its users are between 13-24 years old and 78% are between 18-24. But this is where time has been on Will& #39;s side.
His hesitancy to join SM came from the old adage (that I often miss) of over exposure combined with an artists need for mystique. (Beyonce also echoed this statement in her 2011 documentary, & #39;The Year of 4& #39;). But back to time working, albeit unintentionally, for Will. Hi body.
At 49 Will didn& #39;t *need* social media. He& #39;d amassed an estimated $350M net worth, a career that spanned 25 years, two Oscar nods, had a family, etc. Even when the calls from Hollywood slowed down, the allure and novelty across almost three generations was still there.
Fun Fact: Will may not have the statues to solidify his work from "serious organizations", but at 51 he is the most nominated celebrity in the history of Nickelodeon& #39;s Kids& #39; Choice Awards picking up his 29th nod in 2020. Why does this matter? Remember those Snapchat demographics?
But if you miss/prefer him in the film/TV space, although production is halted, & #39;King Richard& #39; and the sequel to & #39;Bright& #39; (at the time, Netflix& #39;s first) is still ahead. He& #39;s also producing & #39;This Joka& #39;, a stand up comedy series for the newest streaming baby on the rise, Quibi.
