BREAKING: More than 500 people on Rikers Island have tested positive for COVID-19.

Four corrections officers have died from the virus. Another 273 staff are infected.

The total for incarcerated people is not cumulative - it does not include people who contracted COVID-19 while on Rikers, but who have since been released.

It's interesting to me that all these people (the mayor, governor, police) are opposed to releasing people from Rikers Island and so far the people who are dying because of that are corrections officers.

I mean what does that say about who people in power really care about?

Worth noting that in NYC, a staggering 67% of corrections officers are Black.

Very different demographics to NYS prisons, which are located upstate, where guards are overwhelmingly White.
