As someone who wasn't raised in the United States, can someone explain to me why Voter ID is such a hotly contested issue here?

It is to my knowledge that most countries have Voter ID, and even here in the United States you need an ID for a vast majority of adult functions, no?
It's also not particularly hard to get an ID card here, I applied for mine a couple years ago in a SF DMV and the whole process cost me less than $30.

I just don't quite understand what's the objection. You need an ID for everything. Maybe ID Cards should be cheaper, if not free

The argument that you shouldn’t need to pay a fee in order to vote is a valid one.

I still think there should be measures to prevent voter fraud, but IDs should probably be free to adults
