Lol! You need concepts like "Divinization" to make sense of ideas and concepts in Hindu Scriptures when you try to evaluate them in Charvaka framework (जड़वाद).

Because fabric of the cosmos is inert matter and only means of valid knowledge are five sensory perceptions combined with Protestant beliefs couched as "scientific" method/approach (at the heart of Indology) you end up with such understanding.

Calling any mention and description of चेतन तत्व eg an Avatar as "Divinization" amounts to what @RajivMessage calls separating transcendence from mundane and attacking integral unity of Hindu metaphysics. (Chapter 3 of Battle for Sanskrit).

Instead of trying to force fit Vedic idea of Avatar in a Charvaka framework, one should try to make sense of it as Sages meant and understood it ie understand it in Vedic framework of चेतनवाद (Consciousness is the fabric of Cosmos).

Adi Sankara used the following Mantra of ChAndogyopaniShad as basis to write Pancheekaranam ( https://sanskritdocuments.org/doc_z_misc_shankara/paJNchi.html?lang=sa) describing how चेतनतत्व transforms finally itself into matter and various things in between.

Sankhya of Kapila describes a similar evolution from Purusha + Prakriti pair to matter as we perceive.

So if चेतनतत्व (Consciousness) can manifest itself in the form of this whole universe, why can't it assume the form of fish, tortoise, boar, or human as stated in Vedas.

Abv Vedic position is explained in more clear terms in Tripura Rahasya ie चेतनतत्व (Consciousness) in its original form is एकम अद्वितीयम but assumes a form per the liking of his devotees what Hindus call Avatar. I am not even quoting Gita (4.6).

So what's illogical or inconsistent in idea of Avatar as described abv (and accepted and practiced by Hindu tradition) that @Koenraad_Elst is against what he call worship of humans like Rama, Krishna via "divinization" and save Hindus from the perceived embarrassment?

I am sorry to say but despite living in India for such a long time and that too in the company of Ram Swarup and SR Goel, @Koenraad_Elst's experience of Hindu Scriptures is that of Protestant Christian at core and the problems he wants to solve are his own making.

I am quoting @VishwaAdluri from "Nay Science".

"The “knowledge” the Orientalists attained in this process (ie Indology which is an ill conceived Protestant theology) was thus pertinent only for them, premised on objects that existed only for them."
