Cleansing is the act of stripping an object, person or area of any lingering energetic attachments or impressions and returning it back to its natural state of being, frequency and vibration. [πšƒπ™·πšπ™΄π™°π™³]
Consecration is usually done after a cleansing and this is done to dedicate a purpose to whatever was cleansed. Whenever we make any magical oils, candles, or tools of any kind for a specific purpose we are consecrating that object towards that purpose.
Whenever we dedicate a statue, image or tool on our altar to a spirit or deity that we work with, we are consecrating that item towards the divine purpose of honoring and working with the spirit through that.
Why do we cleanse?

Everything is energy, everything around you has its own aura and energetic field. The energies around us do not act in isolation, they interact with one another and in the process pick up things, energetic imprints and impressions.
We as humans do this as well, that's why a lot of spiritual traditions emphasize the importance of spiritual hygiene! But spiritual hygiene doesn't just apply to us, it also extends to the things around us too.
In brujeria, energy can be passed on to objects intentionally, this was often (and still is in some places) a common vehicle for curses and hexes back in the day.
When to cleanse?
Β
A rule of thumb for cleansing objects is that you want to cleanse most things that you're bringing into your home, especially any antique or second hand items that you know previously belonged in the possession of another person.
You want to cleanse your home itself regularly, now that we're in the springtime it's an excellent time to do so. Setting the intention to rid your space of stagnant energy while thoroughly cleansing does the trick. Dispose of the trash left from this outside your home.
After breakups, sometimes y'all wonder why you can't get over a man meanwhile his scent and his essence is left all over your things. Cleanse your place and your belongings to make sure that there aren’t any residual energies left from that ain't sh*t man lingering around!
How to Cleanse
Β
Cleansing a space or an object doesn't have to be a complicated or intricate thing. Now depending on how heavy the energy is around an object or an item that dictates the intensity of which you'll be needing to cleanse it. But let's go over some ways to cleanse!
By Smoke: Cleansing through smoke has been one of the most popular ways to cleanse objects throughout history. Camphor, cedar, rosemary, bayleaf, frankincense and dragons blood resin are all good for smoke cleansing
By Water: Any kind of holy water/natural sourced water (that has been consecrated for a holy purpose), florida water or agua de ruda can be used to help cleanse objects of energetic attachments (you can also add this in your spiritual baths as well to cleanse yourself)
By Fire: Fire is cleansing, rejuvenating, restorative and purifying. Fire is used in so many magical traditions and cultures all around the world in purification rituals and to connect to Spirit. Good for cleansing metal objects/jewelry, you can pass the item over a candle flame
By Salt or Earth: Burying an object within salt or soil for 12-24 hours can rid it of unwanted energy; this is because the earth naturally has her own systems and cycles of passing and cleansing energies within herself; rice also suffices for this as well.
Through Sound (bells, drums, shekere and tambourines): This is a common one in a lot of religious and traditional spaces, particularly good for large spaces or ritual areas. Sound travels quickly and is one of the most effective ways to change the energetic atmosphere of an area.
