You know, that is another thing. Why the heck are there no supports between Seteth and Rhea? Like, the way Seteth disparages the crest system and nobility in some supports is at odds with what we are shown/told about how the church upholds these things.
Also the details that show Seteth seems to be involved in keeping Fódlan’s true history hidden in some moments, such as how he interrupts Claude’s investigations in Golden Deer.
Not saying this is bad writing or that Seteth is a bad character, quite the opposite, it is actually interesting that he puts so much effort into serving an institution that he does not seem to have much faith in.
Which, I get. Rhea is his last sibling and the Church keeps his daughter, Flayn, safe. I can understand why he is like this and acts with such clear contradictions. Seteth is very human (for lack of a better word, my dragon-dude).
It is just such a shame that his relationship with the Church, and by extension Rhea, is never given any elaboration. The most we get is Seteth’s goodbye letter to Rhea and/or Rhea’s reaction to Seteth and Flayn’s deaths.
Like, a support with Rhea would be the most clear-cut way to explore this part of Seteth’s character, and provide opportunities to explore Rhea’s character as well. Because I am still confounded at how the game avoids putting a light on Rhea despite her role in the lore/story.
Like, why the heck does Rhea have no supports with any of her family members? Is she really distant with them too??? That does not make much sense to me, given how she has such a strong reaction to Edelgard stealing the Crest Stones in the holy tomb.
Rhea is deeply attached to the *corpses* of her family, the living brother and niece are right there. Is Rhea so consumed by what happened in the Red Canyon that she feels more responsibility towards her dead family than the living? That’s kind of tragic.
Which, like, can still be explored in the supports!!! I have said this before. Claude, Dimitri, and Edelgard hiding their pasts and traumas from their classmates in their supports really shows the distance the 3 of them put themselves between their own friends.
A support with Seteth and Flayn too could show this distant, if well meaning, attitude Rhea has towards her family.
I am so confounded. All the more with the interview saying that they brainstormed Silver Snow first. You made SS first, and while you were making the rest of the game never asked yourself any of these questions??? Did you just choose not to see it?
Like, think about this for a second, if Crimson Flower was made second, was not intended initially, then all of the post-skip A and B supports Edelgard has must have been added with the creation of that route. No one thought to make some extra supports with Rhea?
I lot of folks feel like the game refuses to acknowledge the awful things Rhea did by omitting her presence in much of the story, which... mm. Is not wrong, because Rhea becomes this damsel in distress with no presence in 3 out of the 4 routes.
Like, I say do not ignore it, let Rhea own up to what she has done. That will do her better than hiding it. I would like more content where Edelgard is confronted by the darker implications of her actions/route, so hell yeah I want content where Rhea addresses what she does too.
Like, she only says sorry for what she did in her S support with Byleth. Her redemption arc starts at the very end of the story and just- ends, we do not get to see it. And only in one route, the other two routes where she survives we just never see her again.
This started with my asking for more development for Seteth and then got hijacked by my frustrations/interests in Rhea as a character and how Rhea ended up being written. Apologies for that.
But, yes, there is a fascinating family dynamic going on between Rhea, Seteth, and Flayn and none of it gets explored to its full extent and that makes me disappointed.
