Updated @ICNARC data - now for the first 2204 UK patients admitted to ICU. 210 units across the country. Broadly similar to previous reports, but significantly higher numbers now.

Average age of COVID patients in ICU remains 60. SD ~13.
Increase in proportion of fully independent patients. Much higher than the typical admission to ICU with viral pneumonia over the last 2 years.
The heavy predilection towards male patients continues. Useful breakdown of the 16-49 age bracket into smaller subdivisions, in the week that we learnt a previously well 13 year-old died from COVID-19.
BMI distribution continues to mirror general population distribution, with the majority of patients >25. Some more separation from the typical non-COVID viral pneumonia admission.
Almost 3/4 of patients receiving advanced respiratory support (intubated/put on ECMO) are male
89% of patients getting advanced respiratory support are fully independent. Only 0.5% have pre-existing cardiovascular disease and 1.1% pre-existing respiratory (lower than typical viral pneumonia admissions). Dramatic difference in ventilation in first 24 hours.
That last figure has a caveat - patients are being intubated earlier and non-invasive ventilation options are being used less than in typical admissions.
Out of the 680 patients that have left ICU (the rest of the 2204 are still there now), precisely 50% have died.

Compare this to typical admissions with non-COVID viral pneumonia, who, as shown above, have fewer comorbidities and are more independent. Only 22% of them die.
It's possible that as more patients leave ICU, the proportion alive will improve. But we've now seen a fairly steady state evolve for the last 2 weeks, around 50:50.
For patients that get to a point where they will need intubation, 2/3 die.
Risk steadily increases with age, with 77% of under 50s surviving

BMI risk goes up >30

Presence of severe comorbidities not a huge increase (but remember definitions & selection bias)

Interestingly those with basic resp support die more often. This is likely to a few factors >
1. Those deemed unlikely to survive invasive ventilation (ie too unwell/frail) will be recorded in 'basic' resp support column and 2. Many intubated patients are still in ICU now - the ones discharged alive have had short stays & were probably less unwell.
