Happy Friday (not that days mean much to me anymore, but Happy Something anyway!) I read some Goode Stuffe last month and I want to tell you about it!!
First of all, I read some GOOD BOOKS! I was super pumped to finally get my hands on "Deathless Divide" by @justinaireland, sequel to "Dread Nation" which was one of my faaavorite books of the last couple years. #2 might have been even better! IDK, don't make me pick a fave plz
And I read "Mooncakes" by @suzusaur and @AngrygirLcomics which was just what I needed right now, such a good kind and totally charming story that I blew through in an afternoon and then was mad at myself for not making it last longer!
While the current crisis feels apocalyptic (and is lurching that way in many marginalized communities) the last of the books I read last month is @TochiTrueStory's "Riot Baby" which is a wrenching look at the apocalypse already going on for so many POC in this country. It's not--
--an easy read and you should definitely read it anyway.
And I was totally charmed by the small comfortable sweetness of M.J. Pettit's "Thrifting With the Snow Queen" http://dailysciencefiction.com/science-fiction/other-worlds-sf/m-j-pettit/thrifting-with-the-snow-queen
I loved "La Bête" by @leahbobet, a lovely, sharp re-examination of a classic fairy tale that has set its roots deep in our culture that is well served by a bit of judicious pruning here http://strangehorizons.com/fiction/la-bete/
The future @canadianist builds in "Thank You For Your Patience" hurts for its bleak familiarity. We are stronger together and there are so many entities who find it more convenient for us to be weak and apart. A wonderful, sad-with-a-dash-of-hope story. https://reckoning.press/thank-you-for-your-patience/
"Rat and Finch are Friends", about unfairness and injustice and a chance to come together despite these horrible things, by @Ethereal_ilo broke my heart (then sewed it very gently and kindly back together by the end). http://strangehorizons.com/fiction/rat-and-finch-are-friends/
Another sad-but-not-TOO-sad story, @jskurella's "A Promise of Dying Embers", beautiful writing carrying us over the broken bones of what can't be changed to a lovely, possibility-charged ending. http://www.diabolicalplots.com/dp-fiction-62a-a-promise-of-dying-embers-by-jordan-kurella/
That's it for now! Hope you're all staying safe and well out in social-isolation-land! I miss your faces, especially those of you I won't get to see at spring and summer cons now. Take care out there 💜
