It's started: a tenant just reached out to me, asking if I could defer rent because she's been furloughed today. All I can say is, you're paid up thru 30 April, let's talk again in a couple weeks and see what's happening before May rent is due, and we're all in this together. 1/
What I *want* to say is "sure, no problem, you don't have to worry about rent right now. Banks have deferred mortgages for the next 3 months." But I can't, b/c I still owe the mortgage, insurance, water bill, trash bill, and taxes, and *I'm* not getting paid at my job either. 2/
I'm disappointed in the amount of landlord hate on Twitter. Some landlords are terrible. But many are just normal people who own a property or two, and it's their side business. There is significant risk to being a landlord, and it's not "passive income." 3/
I will do the best I can for my tenants, because that's the right thing to do. I'd just appreciate some help on this, from those higher up the food chain than me. That's all. Get it together, banks, and help us out. We bailed you out with our tax dollars, didn't we??
