#FF7RSPOILERS Shinra is much more explicitly fash in this adaptation. In the original they felt like a shit 90s office but now they're this self-applausing neoliberal bullshit cult with obvious Imperial Japan affectations and Barret sneering at them is just delightful

#FF7RSPOILERS one thing in this that was not comfortably expressed by the adaptations is that a man with the most enormous fuckoff sword ever made is a really scary thing to have walking around places where people are supposed to live

#ff7rspoilers the first scene that really abosolutely feels like it fits the original is a bit of nonsense where Tifa takes Cloud around Sector 7 and Cloud proceeds to insult everyone for no reason and make himself extremely unpopular, get owned by his landlady, etc

#FF7Remake Cloud slamming open the doors to Seventh Heaven like saloon doors from a Spaghetti Western

#ff7rspoilers it is done very very very well that Cloud is both extremely intimidating and also, we're repeatedly told, has dark eyebags due to not getting enough sleep and "doesn't look like a mercenary"

#ff7rspoilers he also has no ability to modulate the persona to the point where he goes around trying to scare little kids, but when someone tells him flat out that he is not cool he begins whining "I am cool"

#ff7rspoilers there is a slightly less dark but still very dark Cloud moment with Johnny, where Tifa freaks out afterwards about Cloud's behaviour scaring her

#ff7rspoilers there is a scene in this game where Cloud gets his sword stuck in a doorframe

#ff7rspoilers the stuff about how the terrorist attack messed up the transport line so now people who work on the plate can't work and there's people panic buying canned food is not the fantasy escapism I needed right now

#ff7rspoilers there is an NPC line where someone sees Cloud and wonders if he'd help him do his roots

#ff7rspoilers my two favourite Sector 7 NPCs, the nervous soldier and the aggressive one who gives him pointers on acting tough, are here and I'm happy

#ff7rspoilers I am disappointed to tell you that this game starts out with a side quest where a shopkeeper asks you to get rid of some rats

#ff7rspoilers a very weird pulled punch is Cloud kind of obviously killing a load of guys to keep them from snitching and Tifa, afterwards, saying "hurry before they wake up"

#ff7rspoilers shades of the bizarre thing in Dirge of Cerberus where whenever it would be too explicit for Vincent to actually fight someone he would shoot them with "tranquiliser rounds"

#ff7rspoilers this is running at an extremely hard 16 though so I think they have pulled back on the blood to allow Cloud to say "shit" constantly

#ff7rspoilers Cloud's murderhobo persona has very strong emphasis on the "hobo" here - he has less than no money, Tifa fixes him up with a place to stay but points out he has no possessions, he's mistaken for a "junkie", etc
