Those of us who remember Gordon Brown’s tenure as PM as three years of anonymous hostile briefings and unrelenting vituperation from senior colleagues might be permitted to raise an eyebrow at his sudden recuperation into the pantheon of Good Labour People.
I mean, they’re allowed to hate Corbyn more than Brown, but they hated Brown too, and it’s striking not only that they’ve tactically forgotten this, but that they’re being allowed to forget.
It’s the Kinnock principle in action. Kinnock was a joke figure for years in the Blairite inner circle, but these days he’s an anti-factional moderniser, a veritable John The Baptist.
