Three years ago this week, I bought a 1997 Land Rover Defender (and promptly took it off-roading). Initially I hated it and had terrible buyer& #39;s remorse -- but it has since become one of my best friends. Here are a few of our adventures in the last three years.
It& #39;s been a great companion on Nantucket Island, one of my favorite vacation spots, and I even shipped it there last summer for a few weeks of beach driving and car dancing to stupid pop songs with my best friends.
...except for the time the driveshaft failed and it broke down in the middle of the busiest intersection on the island. It was around noon when the tow truck driver arrived, and the first thing he said was, "Well, this is the second one of these I& #39;ve towed today."
It came to my wedding in Washington DC, one of my very favorite places, where it served as my wedding "getaway car" after the ceremony. Here we are with my groomsmen (and groomswoman), and at various spots around the District.
It has also made some good friends over the years. And enemies, with at least one Audi Allroad.
Now it lives the good life in California, where it doesn& #39;t have to worry about rust, or snow, or tight city parking spots, or pretty much anything -- except for biennial smog checks.
Happy three years! Let& #39;s hope for many more.
