Reflexive contrarianism within some segments of the left is going to be the end of us, I swear to god. You do not need to hand it to the GOP. Not ever.
Here is something I think people misunderstand. Yes, universality of benefits is often a left-wing idea. However, it can also exist on the right, at least w/in traditional conservative thought (not necessarily modern American conservatism).
Given that this crisis is undeniably universal (poor people will suffer more in the long run, but not only poor people will suffer in the short term), you might see the GOP acting more amendable to giving some kind of universal relief.
That does NOT mean they are becoming more generally amendable to either universal relief or relief for poor people in the future. Stop memory-holing every single action the GOP has taken against the social safety net in the past ~50 years.
Conservatives often prefer universal relief to targeted welfare. That doesn't mean that, by association, you should argue *against* universal relief. But you need to understand their motivations & their long game. They're not operating with the same set of principles as you are.
The GOP is *not* going to give universal relief now and maintain universality later on. If they use universal relief now, they will most likely refer to this action in the future as a reason to cut more targeted relief that is meant to help poor people.

That's the long game.
I can GUARANTEE you that if the GOP bails out everyone now, they will later use this as a reason to cut Medicaid, and perhaps even Social Security and Medicare. Stop giving them credit!
They *might* bite the bullet on helping poor people during this crisis if it means they don't have to *specifically* help poor people. (They still won't do enough). And then, no matter what they do, they will definitely exploit this crisis to hurt poor people in the future.
