Didn't like the Overstory. Read it on rec by the author of Em_rgent Str_tegy, but damn: it ain't eco-fascism so much as eco-racism, story starts w white settlers & erases indigeneity completely, the few nonwhite characters r continually, tiringly described in terms of ethnicity -
& I could've done without the gratuitous & repetitive abjection w which the one disabled characters body is described. Also: relentlessly normative in a red blooded all-American white cishet novelist dude kinda way, all tumescent & bristling w muscular adjective & florid plotline
& in addition it does by virtue of its own existence - & size, thickness, _girth, etc (all wood pulp, presumably, tho mine was on Kindle like the true barbarian this book wd make a kindle user out to be) kind of stand in pointless opposition to the one real point it's tryna make?
Every time I tell myself: just bc some fucking literary American has won a big American literary prize dont mean the book will be any good or that I have to read it, in fact statistically it tends to mean rather that it won't & I shouldn't, but I get suckered in still. Pfft
Cc @metaleptic sorry spoilers but that's the review
