Lot of writers are telling others what they think they should write / will be popular.

1. They dont know what they are talking about.

2. Chasing trends never works.

3. Write what is truthful and honest to you. And work hard to make it entertaining to others.
Also, most of what I am seeing is just inane and absurdly inaccurate.

First off... this situation is nothing like the great depression. Psychologically, it's effect on society (which we dont know yet) will be nothing like that was.
Also there is a misrepresentation of what was popular during the great depression, especially since movies weren't the primary entertainment, and tv didn't exist.

But plenty hugely popular works dealt with the depression and weren't only escapist.
No one could have predicted post WW1 dadaism. Or Lord of the Rings post 9/11, or game of thrones.

Musicals got huge post ww2... but so did low budget scifi.

Gangster films and gritty crime were huge in the great depression
Finally, I can only speak to years of rejection, so you know, probably listen to someone who has sold more shit.

But... hollywood dont have their fingers on the pulse and you can't predict what they will buy. Everyone has their own view and chasing their own dragons.
So yeah. Write whatever you want. Write what matters to you. Be smart about it and the craft is to make it something that connects with others and can be sold /made.

But dont let anybody tell you what people will like years from now just cause they have stayed inside for a month
