Re Prisons: Our @DRCOhio team has done a great job. They've been working on their plan since February. Visitation has stopped, employees/contractors are screened, inmates coming in are screened, and we have a 5-week period where new inmates stay in reception.
But no system is perfect. We've seen what has been happening in other states.
I felt it was important to look at our prison population. We have almost 49,000 prisoners. We've started to look at different prisons who it might make sense to send home early.
We are sending letters to judges in the state about 38 prisoners who might be able to be released early. These are not sex offenders, murderers, domestic abusers...we've screened out many people.
We do have 23 women in our prison who are pregnant or have a child in prison. We will send a letter to the judge in their case to make a determination on if these women are appropriate to be released early.
We have 15 people over the age of 60 and are approaching their release date that we believe could be released early. Again, these are not serious violent offenders.
