Just want to pause to applaud the Media team at @Adweek. Media trade reporting is a different beast than general reporting. We're covering the impact this coronavirus is having on our profession, watching it destroy our industry. 1/n
It's an emotional lift for reporters not used to it. We're used to covering the inner workings of media - how sales teams work; how ad-tech works; etc - not how our peers are losing their jobs while at the same time managing the toll of the pandemic on our own lives. 2/n
The most important aspect of being a journalist (imho) is empathy. As trade reporters covering the inner machinations of this industry that often gets ignored for snark (I am as guilty as anyone). But watching this team approach these stories with empathy makes all the difference
For example, @SaraJerde covering how news organizations are facing this crisis, as ad revenue diminishes and events get canceled, has shown that putting yourself in a source's shoes is vital for understanding what happens. This is a tenet of our job. 3/n
Seeing @ScottNover and @9Number9 report on all things platforms has shown that these companies are playing such an important role, but still have much to figure out. 4/n
The reporter I've always wanted to be, @ronan_shields, shows me how covering an esoteric beat (adtech) can be humanized, especially as we watch this industry contract like an accordion. 5/n
We were fortunate to grab @AndrewBlustein in early March, just a week before all this happened. His stories about ad tech and CTV are graceful & elegant. 6/n
The media desk here is split between the above and the TV world. There is no stronger reporter and writer than @jasonlynch. Seriously, he is an encyclopedia of TV knowledge. I learn something from him every day, and I am incredibly grateful to have him as an ally. 7/n
On the streaming beat, @kelseymsutton has figured out how this all works. I go to her for my streaming questions. And her writing is crisp and analysis sharp. She also makes me great birthday cards. 8/n
If you're in TV news, you know @ajkatztv. The dude is a machine but approached every PR person with respect; even the ones that don't deserve it. 9/n
And finally, @UpperEastRob. While not on the media beat, he is on the team. He is our institutionalist. Our shaman. Our alchemist. Throw him an idea, and boy, watch him spin that yarn. (look for next week's big story on the psychology of informality). 10/n
These are dark times. For the world, for our industry. I miss seeing them every day, so I will publicly humiliate them by heaping all this praise onto them. I am so fortunate to call them colleagues. Take a moment to appreciate what you have. Now where's my copy? 11/11
