Was invited by @GlobalEdmonton for an interview on COVID-19, but disinvited after proposing to discuss how oil sands work camps can spread infection. Apparently that’s news which must be censored in Alberta.
So I’ll say it here. There are tens of thousands of workers in those camps, from all over Canada. They live in close quarters where self-isolation is hard or impossible. If infected, they fly home after their weeks on and are superspreaders to other provinces. Obviously bad.
This is a good story for journalists to develop. So far, the oil sands companies are not saying how many out-of-province workers are in the camps and how (or if) they are self-isolating. Secrecy is not good enough in times of a fatal pandemic that threatens us all.
And if @JLynNye at Global Radio in Edmonton agrees that this topic is important to discuss, among other COVID-19 issues, I will try to be as helpful as I can. No hard feelings.
