Husband David McKean confirmed the pair were lost Thursday after about 4 p.m. during a family gathering at a house owned by his wife’s mother, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. The pair went in a canoe to retrieve a ball children had kicked into the water.

McKean said his wife and son “popped into a canoe to chase it down. They just got farther out then they could handle, and couldn’t get back in.”
