/8 Many organisations are furloughing employees in response to the #coronavirus pandemic, but not following the rules from @HMRCgovuk on #volunteering could block their job retention grants.
/8 Last week, the government announced the #coronavirus job retention scheme – providing grants towards salaries of furloughed employees. 3/8 Furloughing is an ‘all or nothing’ decision. Furloughed employees cannot do any work for their organisation. This includes any activity that makes money for or provides service to the organisation – that includes volunteering
/8 People can volunteer on furlough, but not with the organisation they are furloughed from – otherwise the organisation may not claim on the #coronavirus job retention scheme.
/8 Taking part in volunteering organised by employers is also likely to prevent claims under the job retention scheme – this includes asking employees to give up their time to charity partners or take part in furlough-swaps.
/8 Volunteering while on furlough is a great way for people to support their local communities and keep active – but volunteering must be a personal choice and not something organised by their employer.
/8 You can still support furloughed employees by helping them find their own volunteering roles and providing a reference if needed.
