Some thoughts. I currently work at ASDA. Today I was picking for home shopping. For the first time in all of this I was really overwhelmed and stressed. It was so busy in the shop. I was in everybody’s way, they were in mine, no one was following the one way system (we can’t as
we just don’t have the time but you can!) and there was absolutely no possible way to stick to 2m apart. I tried but it was impossible. As we picked I found out that (and forgive me if I misquote figures) we are averaging 18000 items per day for HS. At a speed of 150 items per
hour which is our aim (new workers like me are nowhere near this target & even experienced colleagues aren’t currently as we must bag everything, which slows the process down) that’s 20 people working 6 hours straight. Which means in reality it takes much longer. Why am I
telling you this? I want you to think about what you are buying. Every item. Because every item puts more people at risk. And that’s not an exaggeration, today I experienced it first hand. Every pick puts us in contact with more people. Imagine if every order had two less
items? Three? That would make a HUGE difference. So what I am asking is for you to think about what you buy and how many times you visit the shops. Because the busier it is, the harder it is for us. You may have only been there 10 minutes but everyone’s 10 minutes adds up
when we’re on an 8 hour shift. I know it’s hard and I know everyone needs things to occupy their time and I am not asking you to go without. But perhaps this pandemic isn’t the time to try the new complex recipe with lots of ingredients. Or isn’t the time to buy everyone an
Easter egg. Perhaps this is when you make the recipe which uses up old ingredients or is a simple one from your childhood? Maybe your children can play with old clothes for dress up, rather than buying new toys and this is a time for them to learn that not getting something is
sometimes as important as getting it. Maybe we can challenge ourselves to use a bit less, buy less and save more. I won’t even begin to talk about the amount of plastic for every delivery and how that hurts my heart. And please try to only go to the shop once per week if you
can, whilst giving us space. We are dashing around, we don’t mean to be rude or in your way so please give us the benefit of the doubt and a wide berth.
I don’t mind being out there amongst it but today it got to me and I think we can all do a little bit better.

Small sacrifices can make a big difference.
