FS Demarious Randall joins the Raiders who were in need of a ball hawk in the secondary. What does he do well? How does he fit into the Raiders defense? Thread starts now.
2019 saw 3 games in a row against playoff caliber offenses; Baltimore, San Francisco, and Seattle. I'll go through these games and show you some themes I saw from Randall's game.
Even though the Browns beat the Ravens early last season, Randall didn't have a great game. Here he is in a quarters concept near the goal-line. Both he and the LB jump the under allowing the TE an easy TD.
He was used more frequently as a blitzer in 2019 than at any point in his career. The results are solid. He gets a free rush here but taking down Lamar Jackson can be a feat.
I thought his open field tackling was inconsistent. Here's a negative example where he gets passive. More examples of good, but enough bad that I needed to show you.
Going up against the Super Bowl runner-ups in the following week. He had a much better tackling day. From single high this is a textbook example of tracking the near hip from inside-out which prevents the cutback.
Goalline Quarters concept again but this time no miscommunication. Needs to stay on top of Kittle and is able to drop his hips and take away the inside break to make a PBU.
Another great Goal-line play. This time from a single high defense. Jumps in front of this crossing route despite the QB trying to look him off. Good instincts and break on the ball.
The following week against Seattle. He doesn't get targeted here, but this is an example of a modern NFL cover 3 adjustment. Randall has the speed and instincts to bring a big boost to the Raiders on the back end.
But again, not a great tackling day from Randall. He's more of a drag down tackler and prefers caution over aggression. He won't be in a bad position but sometimes this happens.
Showed up again as a blitzer and notched another sack against a slippery QB.
Okay thats all I got so far but I'll continue to watch. Bottom line he's really solid in coverage. Won't wow as a tackler. Offers some upside as a blitzer. I want to see him play some man coverage, haven't seen too many reps of that yet.
