Hello! I am Annabella Ebel and I will be starting a Twitter thread about Puerto Rico’s economy and how the influence of the United States affected it. 1/15

My main question for this paper has been if the economic decline and ruin of Puerto Rico is directly related to the United States’ influence in the territory. 2/15
Ever since Puerto Rico was settled by Columbus in 11/1493 PR has been home to raids & theft. “The days of Spanish colonialism… the ships came empty, and left...full of gold, silver, and other riches stolen from the indigenous [people],” (Backiel 11). 3/15

Throughout the island’s history, it has been taken advantage of by outside sources, never allowing people to live peacefully. When the US took charge of Puerto Rico, the island’s economy was already damaged, but it seems that the U.S. only made it worse. 4/15

While P.R. has been owned by the power horse U.S., P.R. has fallen farther into economic dysfunction. In my sources, statistics and specific examples showed that many policies and acts created by the U.S. did more harm than help for the island’s economy. 5/15 #BorderStoriesPitt
The method I have chosen to write this research paper has been Track 3: The Creative Writing. I am very excited to try and show what I have learned through story. 6/15

The sources explored are multiple articles on the policies and actions taken by the United States on Puerto Rico’s economy. Another primary source focuses on statistics about how the Puerto Rican people feel about the possibility of statehood. 7/15

Ever since the PR became the territory of the US, the economy has found new lows and reached the point of huge debts. Many sources show the U.S. use of unyielding legal actions played a role in how the economy of Puerto Rico plunged further into debt. 8/15

I would love to explore more into how the people of PR feel about the US, which is also what the source "A Story Told through Plena: Claiming Identity and Cultural Autonomy in the Street Festivals of San Juan, Puerto Rico." focuses on. 9/15

Paulina Guerrero, author of the above article, explores how the people of PR protest the US involvement with the island in interesting ways. During celebrations, Puerto Ricans come together and create presentations, both for politics and tradition. 10/15

In many of these presentations, people have taken the opportunity to take political stands and protest the U.S. and its ownership of Puerto Rico. 11/15

I feel that questions like these matters because not many people pay attention to the little island. Frankly, neither does the POTUS, but that is a whole different topic (or is it?). 12/15

All in all, I feel that questions about powerhouse nations’ involvement with underprivileged peoples should be discussed. Whether we discuss if the involvement is truly necessary, or whether the people WANT places like the U.S. to be involved. 13/15

In conclusion, the purpose of this research paper is to use concrete evidence and come out with the truth. Is the involvement of the U.S. with PR causing more harm than help? Does the US play a major role in PRs economy crisis? 14/15
