I will admit that Call Me By Your Name had its issues re: portrayal of gay men as a culture, especially in regards to pedophilia and the predatory stereotype already cast on all gay men by society (not to mention a lack of racial diversity). 1/5
That said, I will also defend the film for being well executed: a touching story, beautiful cinematography, phenomenal screenplay, and a heart-wrenching soundtrack. The impact it made on culture is tangible and important. 2/5
With all that on the table, this sequel is a money grabbing, queer exploiting trash fire, and it hasn’t even started production yet. The first film was beautiful and poignant, and this film stands to ruin all that it did. 3/5
The fact that Luca Guadagnino wants to make five films in the series is insulting to me.
Does he give a shit what I think? No. Did I forget to mention some other shortfall of the first film? Probably. Am I deeply sorry in advance? For sure. 4/5
