I've been quiet on Twitter lately, in case anyone has missed my ANGRY YELLING about the p-word.
After two weeks of anxiety spirals and obsessive news reading, my muse and I reached a truce. Writing is actually working, though I have to be strict with my writing conditions. /1

I pulled out my old AlphaSmartâa device I've never gotten along with, despite many attempts over the years to use it. I'm just not a "power through" drafter.
Until now.
I shut myself in a distraction-free space, load up the AlphaSmart, set a timer for 15-20 min... /2

And then I follow the tools I learned in @lindsaymccall's 80/20 class (highly recommend!). I've been delighted by my word counts lately.
Is what I'm writing a mess? Oh god, yes. But this is what I have to do to draft right now because deadlines do not stop for viruses. /3

The old Sooz-method of writing slowly, of rereading and editing yesterday's words before moving forward...I can't do it. It wasn't just holding me back, it simply wasn't working.
My point being: now, more than ever, is a good time to try new methods for your work. /4

If the old way isn't working, then try something totally radical and new.
I never would have thought 15 minutes sprints would work for me ("I need hours!" I would always say), but lo and behold, they are AMAZING. I got 783 words in a 15 minute sprint yesterday--a new record. /5

And I can 100% thank @lindsaymccall for those little bursts of focus. She discusses them in her course, so I tried them...
Welp, I'm a convert. At least during these unsteady times when that's the most sustained, intense focus I can manage. /6

SO TRY NEW METHODS! Try some of mine ( http://susandennard.com/for-writers ) or try Lindsay's ( https://www.lindsayeagarbooks.com/8020 ) or try any of the hundreds out there you thought wouldn't jibe for you...
Oh, and add me as a buddy on #CampNanoWriMo2020 ( https://nanowrimo.org/participants/stowersd) if you're doing it! /end
