During this time I want to offer you one of the purest expressions of grief and faith I've ever seen, which is a Krazy Kat comic by George Herriman. 1/7
Krazy Kat is often about Ignatz throwing a brick at Krazy Kat but this installment was different. Krazy is alone in the Coconino County desert and notices a star has fallen. A baby star. 2/7
The next panels are all action, with Krazy cradling the star and quickly improvising a hot-air balloon to send the baby star back up to the heavens. 3/7
Labors completed, Krazy falls back asleep and Ignatz appears to see a bundle falling from the sky. 4/7
Officer Pupp reads the note from "Twinkie": "I'm back home, and happy." Only Krazy would know what that means, but Krazy will remain asleep in the open desert. The story ends there. 5/7
This comic appeared in newspapers in December 1939. Herriman's beloved daughter Bobbie — an artist herself who had been in frail health and had undergone numerous surgeries throughout her life — had died three weeks earlier. 6/7
