"A century ago in “The Jungle,” Upton Sinclair wrote about how the teeming tenements and meatpacking houses where workers lived and labored were perfect breeding grounds for tuberculosis as it swept the country."
"Picture yourself waking up in a decrepit, single-wide trailer packed with a dozen strangers, four of you to every room, all using the same cramped bathroom and kitchen . That is life for far too many farmworkers in our country today."
One of my aunts, who was an brilliant and nuanced woman who wanted a more closed US-Mexico border (she lived on it) also advocated for migrant workers' health.
She said she saw women and men out in the fields picking tomatoes while a crop duster dusted pesticides over the workers and crops at the same time.
This is how a lot of food reaches our table. We've never faced the facts about it as a nation. Maybe we will now. Maybe we'll do better. It's up to us.
