New York faces a very real budget crisis. Hard cuts have to be made. But Cuomo's insistence & legislature's acquiescence to cuts targeting health care & education, zero shared sacrifice by the wealthiest, and regressive policy is just the wrong approach. https://gothamist.com/news/cuomo-state-budget-robust-progressives-call-it-republican-austerity-warfare
Even with some tax increases on millionaires & billionaires, really painful cuts would have been necessary.
But modestly increased taxes on fortunes over $5m or incomes over $1m could have provided funding for emergency food, for health care, for better school technology.

Rolling back bail reform was wrong before the COVID-19 crisis turned our jails into a humanitarian disaster. Before it turned being arrested for a low-level offense into a possible death sentence.
How could we possibly do it now?
How could we possibly do it now?
Then the budget contains two assaults on democracy.
The governor couldn't win his attack on the @NYWFP through last year's unconstitutional commission. So now he sneaks it into the crisis budget.
And then to give him solo power to make additional cuts w/o legislative approval?!

Grateful to many allies who stood up strong against this, and voted NO on budget bills, including @Biaggi4NY @SalazarSenate @HarveyforNY @yuhline @zellnor4ny @Bobby4Brooklyn @CatalinaCruzNY @AMDanQuart @CnDelarosa @rontkim @LindaBRosenthal @AssemblyLWalker and more.
We're going to face very hard decisions in NYC as our budget deadline approaches on June 30th.
And unfortunately (because Albany pre-emption) we don't have the power to raise taxes on the wealthiest in a spirit of shared sacrifice.
But I really hope we can do better than this.

One proposal @NYGovCuomo should still consider, with his new (undemocratic) superpower:
You forged a regional partnership to close bars.
Now, use it close tax loopholes on private equity funds.
It could mean over $1 billion for those most in need. https://www.gothamgazette.com/opinion/9273-save-our-safety-net-continue-regional-coronavirus-approach-taxes-new-york
