Even with some tax increases on millionaires & billionaires, really painful cuts would have been necessary.

But modestly increased taxes on fortunes over $5m or incomes over $1m could have provided funding for emergency food, for health care, for better school technology.
Rolling back bail reform was wrong before the COVID-19 crisis turned our jails into a humanitarian disaster. Before it turned being arrested for a low-level offense into a possible death sentence.

How could we possibly do it now?
Then the budget contains two assaults on democracy.

The governor couldn't win his attack on the @NYWFP through last year's unconstitutional commission. So now he sneaks it into the crisis budget.

And then to give him solo power to make additional cuts w/o legislative approval?!

We're going to face very hard decisions in NYC as our budget deadline approaches on June 30th.

And unfortunately (because Albany pre-emption) we don't have the power to raise taxes on the wealthiest in a spirit of shared sacrifice.

But I really hope we can do better than this.
