/12 Thanks #WallingfordECRtweets @UK_CEH for invite and cool idea! In 2020 world leaders will agree new global #biodiversity framework under #CBD (pre- #COVID19). Many people are thinking about targets for restoring nature, but how to operationalise them? https://www.cbd.int/conferences/post2020
/12 We had an idea! The #mitigationhierarchy is used to ensure development causes #NoNetLoss of #biodiversity. First Avoid impacts, Minimise, #Restore nature, then #offset unavoidable residual impacts https://www.forest-trends.org/bbop/bbop-key-concepts/mitigation-hierarchy/
/12 How about extending this to ALL impacts humans have on nature? @WilliamArlidge showed how: https://academic.oup.com/bioscience/article/68/5/336/4966810 Works really well for #bycatch! As discussed here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/faf.12273 But could we go further? Integrate both impact mitigation AND proactive conservation?
/12 The Mitigation and Conservation Hierarchy was born... We call it #4steps4theearth. Here's a short video to show how it works, by @sophusticated So #governments, #businesses, #councils, #IndigenousPeoples can plan & monitor their contributions...
/12 Yes! The framework helped us fill knowledge gaps & link actions with #biodiversity goals. Combining ecological risk assessment, #MSE and #mitigationhierarchy with stakeholder consultation we found high risk of #turtle #bycatch but scope for +ve social & ecological outcomes.
/12 This can work for #shark #fisheries management too, as outlined by @hollieboothie working in #Indonesia with @TheWCS https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/faf.12429 Incorporating cost & feasibility at each step can achieve #conservation AND minimise cost to society
/12 Everyone can join in! Use #4steps4theearth to change how you consume ( #diet, #fashion). Concept by @chelisinclair of @ConservOptimism & @SynchEarth
/12 Add #Mitigationhierarchy for compensating impacts to #ConservationHierarchy for planning #conservation actions and get the #MitigationandConservationHierarchy; an integrated, scalable way to organise efforts to restore nature, accounting for both -ve & +ve actions
/12 Thanks to #WallingfordECRtweets @uk_CEH for invite to this fun event! Watch this space for more on #4steps4theearth - we have a paper in review! We're keen for feedback... Any questions? [ #fridayafternoon pic]
