A couple of days ago I asked on here what not is we "value". I have had a few responses. Thought I would share some related, though as yet unformed thoughts prompted by those responses and posit what we might want to be different in our future.
We are all in this together, no one is any different. Our notion of what roles are vital in our society has shifted very quickly from banks & business that generate wealth to family & community that generate kindness, compassion & hope.
The language has softened & changed. Who had ever heard of "furloughed" & what the hell is "new normal"? Politicians are telling us to be kind and to care for each other. Scientists & experts are in the glare of media answering the hard questions, for the most part very very well
Please read the thread that @lokiscottishrap posted on this, its excellent and really what prompted me to do this.
I am going to presume that we don't actually want to go back to the way we were? Inequality, food banks, homes;essness, poverty, drugs deaths, suicides, division, acrimony, greed, mistrust.
These suggestions, themes and thoughts are unformed so don't start off with the usual that's too hard or that won't work or that will cost too much. Let's instead start by asking does it seem the right thing to do & if it does then Dream the Dream.
Use science and evidence to shape and develop all public policy. Include the voices of those who will be affected by the policy in its development & delivery. frame all public policy with compassion & empathy.
Develop human and economic cost modelling to establish the effectiveness, efficiency and efficacy of all public policy development and delivery. Collaboration is not an ideal but a prerequisite.
Actively work to reduce all inequality. Develop and apply economic policies that enable us to live well. Equal pay means equal pay. Establish a link between the pay of senior mangers and the lowest paid role in the company. No Zero hours contracts. No tax havens, anywhere.
Introduce a Universal Basic Income. This will help facilitate a change in how we spend our time as connected humans. Not just paid labour. Parental leave of 2 years to be shared between mum and dad.
No profit to be made from any form of social care or statutory service provision. Home first means accommodation for everyone. No more rough sleepers, ever again.
Less travel of all kinds. More use of video and social media. Broadband as a public utility.
HOW do we do this? U have no idea but I know that together we can start the discussion, the thinking and the dreaming that will begin the change. Let,s not waste a crisis. What else do you have on at the moment?
