“Digital native” is a myth, and I will die on that hill. Children must be taught how to use technology.
If you have not provided lessons on how to do the following, you should not expect that your K-12 students know:
- log into an LMS (Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.)
- create a document
- cite sources
- use any type of Edtech app
- embed images or videos in Slides/PPT
I cannot count the number of children who don’t know how to read or type in a URL.

So many children attempt to type the URL into a Google search box because they don’t know where it actually goes!
User-friendly and intuitive technology do not take the place of teaching. You need to make sure that your students have had opportunities to practice, or you need to ease up on your expectations while they get their footing in these new online programs.
