We didn't have enough to make rent. We talked about paying what we could but decided that since we don't know how long this going to last to save what we have because if we had paid what we could, we would have been left with 40 dollars to last us until he gets his unemployment.
We provided our landlord with a letter stating that we could not pay because both of our incomes have been impacted, my partner had to provide a note from his business partner that they were shut down and that he was unable to work because I'm immunocompromised.
Landlord sent those to the building's management group and this evening we got an email from them informing us that our rent will increase by $200 starting next month for the next 12 months or until the back rent is paid.
If we can't pay again next month, our rent will increase by another $200, if this continues for a 3rd month, rent will increase again by another $200. See how this debt is incurring and the problem it poses for folks living paycheck to paycheck, who barely make rent as it is?
In L.A., this is part of their renter relief. It's not a late fee, it's dividing the cost of our monthly rent by 12 and adding that to our monthly rent because if you cannot pay your rent because of quarantines and job loss due to Covid19, you have 12 months to repay missed rent
If you think this is bad, the original repayment period was only 6 months in the Mayor's original order.
L.A. is already struggling with affordable housing & a growing number of people being forced to live in their cars or on the streets. It's not because there's a lack of housing, there are two new apt buildings on my block that are largely empty, one only filled 15 of it's 75 apts
its not it's in the previous tweet.

There is plenty of housing, but the problem is that it is way overpriced, on top of renters needing to prove they make 3x the rent, have a credit score of 650-700, plus application fees and deposits.
With a lot of us being out of work because of quarantines & job loss due to Covid19, those of us fortunate enough to have housing run the risk of losing it within the next few months & struggling to find new affordable homes, struggling & failing to meet requirements to move in
The @LACityCouncil needs to get off their asses and get serious about working for the citizens of Los Angeles instead of being so short-sighted that their profits and financial well-being comes first in the decisions they are making that affect millions of Los Angelenos.
For those of you outside of Los Angeles, half of our city council are landlords/building owners. Hence the ridiculous repayment plan and lack of meaningful protections for renters.
