(1)Barely reported, but Hancock's plan for final year Student Nurses to shift to NHS work in Coronavirus crisis has actually been expanded to include all 2nd year Student Nurses too. They will be paid Healthcare Assistant rates, but also be paying £9k fees while working (!)
(2)The scheme, covering up to 35k students is "voluntary" - but not that voluntary, Student Nurses who don't volunteer will be suspended from their studies: It could be a good scheme but they need to wipe their fees, make sure they get proper pastoral support, and proper PPE
(3)2nd year Student Nurses currently have hospital placements, but are "Supernumerary", they are not replacement staff. This "Supernumerary" status will no longer be guaranteed. It's a big ask, and a lot of Student Nurses are stepping up to it : But they deserve proper support.
