Getting ready to hear new numbers on how many people are at work and are unemployed in the United States. Wanted to lay out a few things I'm watching for this morning ... 1/n
1. The household survey that tells us who has a job was conducted the week of the 12th. That feels like a lifetime ago--that week, we went out to dinner w/ friends! As you're looking at today's data, remember that in coronavirus time, it's ancient history 2/n
2. Yesterday, we learned that 6.6 million people applied for unemployment insurance. I'm glad we have a system so that the unemployed can get income but this # is historically large; it's about 10X the largest # prior to this coronavirus recession https://twitter.com/equitablegrowth/status/1245691486089482240?s=20
3. Consider this: Most of us in US get our health insurance from our employer. What happens when we lose our jobs? We lose coverage. What's a bad idea during a nationwide deadly pandemic? Millions of people without health insurance https://twitter.com/benzipperer/status/1245729562857746432?s=20
And, 5, which is SUPER IMPORTANT: There's a lot of people who still have jobs. All of those in essential industries are out there working--and often being overworked--ensuring that hospitals are staffed, streets are cleared of trash, our groceries are stocked on shelves ...
... our packages are delivered. These workers need protection so they don't get coronavirus. They all need #paidsickdays. We need to make sure they all can access health care if they need it, ideally with no cost ... & they deserve the nation's appreciation with FAIR PAY
There's also millions of workers telecommuting from home--like me! Many are doing so while also caring for children and home-schooling. I can say that I feel lucky that I can still do my job and that I can do it safely. Every worker deserves the same. /END
