It's interesting how the meanings of words change over time. For example, the mot du jour is 'ramp'. We have several older printed dictionaries at home, shall we see what they say the word means? 1/5
The New Penguin English Dictionary gives it as: Brit, informal - to inflate a price artificially and fraudulently 2/5
Nuttalls Standard Dictionary, on the other hand, has it thus: an attempt to obtain money under false pretences. 3/5
Whereas the New English Dictionary gives this meaning: To dash about, to rage, to storm. 4/5
Last but not least, my personal favourite. The Concise Oxford Dictionary: Swindle, racket, esp. conducted by levying of exhorbitant prices. 5/5
