So, I had promised to talk about my experience of Ken Masters and why he was particularly hard to take seriously as a club director. I'll tell you a little but many of the details I'll leave out because - unlike Ken - I'm not especially interested in airing dirty linen in public
I made a radio appearance alongside KM last year. It was a good experience and he did an excellent job of promoting the work of BRCT. Afterwards he offered me a lift home, which I accepted.
Not long into the journey, he took a call from Steve Hamer, at that time still chairman of the football club. The conversation began with chat about how the radio slot had gone but quickly moved on to other subjects
Now, Mr Hamer was unaware that KM had company but Ken had every opportunity to warn SH that I was present and that perhaps he should call back later and did not do so. My astonishment that I was being allowed to listen in grew as SH became ever more candid
Issues such as player's contracts, who club employees were seen talking to and their motivations for doing so, SH's views on senior staff members (either explicit or implied by choice of language and tone) and the financial future of the club were all discussed
KM eagerly agreed with Hamer while never once saying "Steve, can I call you back when I'm alone". Surely the only responsible thing to do. When he dropped me off, he instead asked me not to say anything - something I'm still largely adhering to now despite being asked to say more
The impression I got at the time was that the pair of them were already marginalised figures in the running of the club but who harboured ambitions/fantasies (your choice which) about taking the club on post Al Qadi. KM actually said to me that they were "the real club men"
The implication being that anyone else involved - owner or senior management - were mercenaries who didn't really care about BRFC.
Aside from the lack of professionalism from KM in allowing me to be party to this sensitive call, my main concern was that there were people involved at boardroom level - ie SH & KM - who were clearly opposed to the work being done by club personnel & prepared to undermine it
Anyone is entitled to a view on the direction of BRFC under the Al Qadi ownership but what I won't accept is that factionalism, division, leaks to individuals & failure to back honest professionals who are doing their best to take the club forward is in any way helpful
Other people have already questioned what Masters has achieved in 13/14 years on the board but I am certain that the insight into his behaviour that I had in spring last year showed that his departure is no net loss to BRFC
At this stage I would respectfully ask @BristolRoversSC and the Presidents Club to reassess their positions immediately and ask themselves what exactly they think they are going to achieve for our football club with their recent statements
