If you have survived on welfare for most of your life or bounced between low waged work and welfare, now is the time to talk. If we don't the newly unemployed will be centred in narratives that don't belong to them. Speak up, Tweet about what welfare has been like for us.
How caseworkers r racist as shit at winz & disproportionately deny Māori (especially sole Māori Mums) their basic entitlements such as food grants. Which violates their human rights & the social security act. How welfare is so humiliating people would rather go hungry than apply.
How caseworkers at WINZ's on the back of MSD r incentivised to force as many of us into work that is unsafe & dangerous, and if we don't take it we get fucking sanctioned. We have our benefits halved or worse suspended completely. I've no words to describe how that feels.
The newly unemployed who've never had to access WINZ, r gonna b horrified. Jobseekers sits at $219 a week, then u get the accomodation supplement which is pennies. Maybe you will get TAS (temp additional support) if ya lucky. You will be plunged below the poverty line over night.
