How’s this for #FormalFriday? 🤩 This exquisite hand-embroidered silk suit (tail-coat, waist-coat and breeches) from c.1790 would have ensured its wearer stood out at the lavish royal parties frequently held at #KensingtonPalace and #HamptonCourtPalace in the 18th century 🥂(1/4)
Just look at the detail in the embroidery! 😲 Fine clothes like these were outrageously expensive, and obviously you couldn’t be seen in the same thing twice. Lords and ladies were known to mortgage their lands in order to purchase outfits for court 💸 (2/4)
Sweat marks 😑👎 Clearly the owner of this suit was nervous when he wore it, or maybe the room was just too hot… Delicate items like this couldn't survive a wash, so linen underwear was worn to soak up sweat 🥵 (3/4)
For the complete look, simply accessorise with powdered wig, cravat, lace cuffs, white stockings, buckled shoes, and a sword 👌 This suit is just one of the 10,000 treasures in our Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, cared for at #HamptonCourtPalace and #KensingtonPalace 👑 (4/4)
