THREAD 1/6

My new @LabourList piece looks at how the Coronavirus crisis is likely to define the next decade in much the same way as the financial crisis did the last.

Labour failed to read the last decade, it can’t make the same mistake again. https://labourlist.org/2020/04/labours-new-leader-must-read-the-next-decade-far-better-than-the-last/">https://labourlist.org/2020/04/l...

The public’s reaction to the financial crash wasn’t simply to swing left against Casino Capitalism, it was a swing against Cosmopolitan Britain enamoured with globalisation, supra-nationalism and a graduate-led economy for the cities.

Coronavirus might swing Britain left, or it may not. But even if it does, that doesn& #39;t mean voters will turn to Labour. Tories are leopards in chameleons& #39; clothing – successful at appearing to change, even if they never do actually change their spots.

Labour should be able to win an argument for international co-operation, but that doesn’t mean the country will swing back to wanting a pre-2016 Britain with open borders.

Labour must work hard to get any public attention whatsoever. The lack of trust and cultural disconnect is palpable.

We must begin by being a constructive opposition, not just on Coronavirus but on trade talks and immigration.
