On March 29, @AbiyAhmedAli announced the successful delivery of #coronavirus supplies from @JackMa
and @AlibabaGroup to the African continent. But, according to two officials at @AfricaCDC and @PMEthiopia the materials never made it to #Eritrea. https://twitter.com/AbiyAhmedAli/status/1244292255285940225?s=20
The reason why this occurred is shrouded in mystery. But here is what we know. On the night of March 23, @flyethiopian set off with emergency supplies to #Djibouti, #Eritrea, #Egypt and #Sudan. https://twitter.com/flyethiopian/status/1242154884587233280?s=21
According to a senior official with @AfricaCDC the cargo plane was supposed to go to Sudan and on to Eritrea. "But the permit was not secured before leaving Addis Ababa. They expected that while in Khartoum they will get the permit but it didn't come."
James Ayodele, spokesperson for @AfricaCDC says "the issue is still being discussed at the diplomatic level."
. @BilleneSeyoum has also confirmed the matter "is being discussed at the diplomatic level." She also said the problem is "more technical" in nature as "many countries had closed their air spaces in the prevention of COVID19 before @JackMa's supplies arrived in Ethiopia.
But, while the emergency supplies to #Eritrea were dispatched March 23, the government in Asmara did not shut down its airspace until March 25 at midnight. https://twitter.com/hawelti/status/1242874657772011520?s=21
What's more, the airspace was only banned to commercial flights, not humanitarian missions. So why has Eritrea entered into diplomatic talks over @JackMa's kind donation? @hawelti @FMoHealth @GeduAndargachew @Ministersaleh
. @MiriamForte84, head of corporate affairs EMEA for
@AlibabaGroup referred all questions to @PMEthiopia and @AfricaCDC
