Exactly a year ago today my car flipped and I could have died. This is what happened. ...
Wednesday 3rd April 2019. Started off from Lusaka on my way to Mazabuka. I was rushing to court. I needed to obtain an Order for stay of execution. A clients goods had been seized by the Baliffs and were scheduled to be sold that same day. This was a matter of utmost urgency
I had only used used the Mazabuka route twice before and those two previous times I wasn’t the one driving but I was confident I knew the route. In my head Mazubuka was a straight route after Kafue.I was so confident I didn’t even need google maps. Well at least I thought so
I inadvertently missed the Mazubaka and went straight on towards Chitundu. Therein begun my problem. I drove for an 1 hour with no Mazubaka in sight. I begun to feel something was amiss. This now 8AM My matter was scheduled for 9AM.
If I missed my 9AM hearing our application would be either struck off or I would probably be heard by the judge the next day which would be too late because the clients goods would have been already sold. It was time to lay my pride aside and ask google where the heck I was.
Google tells me from where I was to the Mazabuka turn off it would take 1 hour. From the turn off to Mazabuka it would take 30min. This means I would reach Court at 9:30. 30 minutes past my hearing time. This wasn’t good at all. Time was of the essence. I had to step on it.
And so it begun. The fast driving. I which for all intents and purposes was over speeding. I managed to cut the estimated 1 hour drive from where I was to the junction to a whooping 35minutes. *insert the too fast too furious sound track here*
Reach the Mazabuka turn and I knew I was screwed because the road was terrible. But i had an emergency at hand to try to drive as fast as I could through the potholes. At one point I remember telling myself; “Freddie slow down you don’t know this road”
Because the road was horrible 9AM found me just as I was about to enter Mazabuka about half a Kilometer from the town. The Judges marshal was alarmed I wasn’t there at 9AM so he called me telling me the Judge was about to start sitting for criminal sessions
I had my hands free on so I picked up the call. I told him to give me 5 minutes and I would be there. I now had to manually cut the call. I still remember the time it was 9:05. I cut the call in a split second and in that split second everything changed.
Next thing I saw was the car drifting to the right. I immediately let my foot off the accelerator and did not make the mistake of breaking. I tried to steer it back to the left, it went back right again.I tried one more time and boom. Ivy ( the cars name) and I were in the air
Flipped twice. Ivy landed on her roof and I was hanging upside down. I still remember the track that was playing when I was upside down. Oliver Mutukudzi’s Nelia. Weird I know.
Came out of the car and checked myself. I was okay. Not a scratch on me. Came out dirty, where the dust came from I don’t know. I asked the locals to flip the car right side up and they did. Then I got in and wanted to drive to court because I was late. I was in shock.
Someone grabbed the keys from me and told me to wait for the cops. The locals were extremely helpful. I had my laptop and phone in the car and money but none of it was stolen.
Police came and did their thing but I told them I still needed to go to court. This dedication. So they drove dirty looking me to court in a police car. Word had already spread that I was in an accident. At court . I don’t know how.
The Judge took one glance at me and granted the order. Thank God she did because going all the way to Mazabuka from Kitwe only to flip and no order being granted would have been extra tragic.
I called @fred_iiv and @Bfacemwape and they came and picked me up. I’m forever grateful to these gentlemen. You guys are my real friends. Alo who still has that video of corner and cave, pothole, flipped. Lol.
Lessons learnt:
1. When you are driving to a place you haven’t been before start off way early so you don’t have to rush.
2. When you are on a road you have never been before, don’t speed. It might not end well.
3. Don’t speed.
4. Don’t talk on your phone while you drive.
