Thread: 1/ Starting this with props to governor @gavinnewsom and @ericgarcetti for stepping in aggressively and early to institute social distancing in California and Los Angeles over Covid. We clearly have benefited greatly from their leadership in this regard.
2/ However, we are now well into our third week of statewide shutdown – businesses suffering, schools closed, families locked down, beaches closed, public spaces closed. Society on the brink. A sacrifice we all adopted to stop the spread.
3/ All worthwhile short because we are seeing infection rates contained at a fraction of the New York and other epicenters. Hospitals not overwhelmed. Infection at 9k in CA vs 95k in New York, deaths at around 212 in CA vs 2,000 in NY. Bravo.
4/But why is there no acknowledgement of this containment? Why do @egarcetti and @GavinNewsom now want to employ even harsher measures – require face masks for 40 million people? Deploy police? No convincing evidence that this is needed since the stay-at-home is clearly working
5// The stay-at-home directives were needed bc we had no data 4 weeks ago. But now, what is @egarcetti and @gavinnewsom’s excuse? How do we STILL HAVE NO DATA? Where are the tests? I assigned a reporter to find the answer to California’s status on this and she came up empty.
6/ So we still don’t know what we don’t know. Shame for leaving the entire state on lockdown while failing us on testing. @Gavinnewsom, @garcetti – get your citizens the widespread testing we need so we can leave our houses, adopt something more informed than mass shutdown.
7/ We’ve followed your demands for the good of all, but you have not followed through on crucial data to release us from this grip. And frankly, you are acting as if the high crisis on the east coast is happening here when it is not. Get us the data and dial this back.
Meant for @MayorOfLA @ericgarcetti please read this thread and respond.
