The #Coronavirus accelerates the emergence of what sociologists call “les nouveaux pauvres”; those are not “unfortunate enough”to receive aid, & are not rich enough to live without it. They work to pay. They are a very vulnerable, yet hidden group in the society, in the sense
That you will not see them begging on the street or waiting in line to receive food coupons. They are the small business owners who have closed down, have debts to pay, & are unable to transfer money to bring over merchandise. They are employees in precarious jobs
Who have to manage a salary of 1500USD, & provide for their elders as well as their children. 1500USD is not that bad right? Wrong. It’s enough for you to pay up the expenses, but it’s not a sustainable way to live.
This situation deeply affects their mental health; they live in constant uncertainty, a couple of bills missed & they could end up on the street. One strain in the economy & they’re unemployed. The overall vulnerability does not give them the luxury to pursue a career aspiration
Or find a niche/specialty in the job market. They must occupy any job that covers their expenses, & their lack of specialization in a skillset makes it harder for them to land well paid positions
Humans crave stability, as it is the only way for their aspirations to flourish. In addition to that, they are on the constant lookout of an identity, what makes them “them”. Unfortunately, those mini-jobs are unable to provide them with neither.
