/12 Wyoming Cowboys is our final featured team of the Best College Logo Tournament& #39;s Final Four. The bucking-horse-and-rider logo has a lot of history spanning over a hundred years. #GoWyo
/12 The first horse depicted was Deadwing in 1918, used on emblems on military gear & equipment in France where a WY regiment served during WWI. Around 1921 UW athletics adopted a 1903 photo turned logo of Steamboat, regarded as one of the greatest bucking horses ever...
/12 Years later the symbol more closely resembled of a different horse, Deadman, also world famous. This version was used on license plates for the first time in 1936 & remains unchanged since. So the logo is of Deadman but is referred to as Steamboat today if I& #39;m not mistaken.
/12 Here is the collection of current logos. Steamboat is also used for institutional purposes. Their athletic font matches the wordmarks. Colors are Gold & Brown. More on the Pistol Pete later.
/12 Past symbols include variations of the bucking-horse-and-rider & the logos pictured. Not necessarily in order of use. Current logo is a touched up version of a previous one but the outline is still a little sloppy.
/12 Similar to of Oklahoma State Cowboys, UW has their own Pistol Pete logo & here are past variations. This 1993 article explains how both trademarked Pistol Petes exist (UW must have & #39;Cowboys& #39; on hat & can& #39;t use others& #39; colors) https://oklahoman.com/article/2418546/osu-wyoming-ok-similar-logos">https://oklahoman.com/article/2...
/12 These old decals show some different variations of the bucking-horse-and-rider used over the years.
/12 Here some ticket stubs I& #39;ve found. Years in order are 1965, 1979, 1987, and 2002 with different logos used on each.
/12 Not long ago there was a different Pistol Pete logo used. The first picture is from a 1985 football media guide and the second is from an undated sweater that shows its colors. I believe this logo was in use until 1989.
/12 Along with being on license plates & signs, the logo is also on the state& #39;s quarter with over 564 million minted. If there& #39;s any one symbol that represents a whole state & its flagship university, it is of Wyoming& #39;s.
/12 On campus is a bronze statue tilted & #39;Wyoming Cowboy& #39;, a representation of Steamboat. Similar to the primary logo, it is 16 feet tall.
/12 Lastly, here is Wyoming& #39;s path to the Final Four. Their average % of votes is highest among the remaining logos. With a rating of 6.2/10 on http://sportslogos.net"> http://sportslogos.net , it was given the first #2 seed as the 5th highest rated logo. #MarchMadness
