This new paper looking at 90k scientists shows why the US needs immigrants. In the 1920s, the US mostly stopped Southern & Eastern Europeans (especially Jews) from entering the US. In addition to the human cost, this reduced patents by 68% in key fields for the next 30 years! 1/2

In contrast, the paper shows Israel benefited from those scientists who, rejected from the US, were able to escape Europe for British Palestine before the Holocaust.
