This is my last tweet on the @CIHR_IRSC decision. Things are not normal, we can all agree on this. We have been asked to do our best for our communities and families and we are all trying. Speaking for myself, I know that it is not business as usual. However, we have the
ability and technology to make this situation more attainable. This is what we are doing for our students, trainees, and HQP. I don't think it is too much to ask that CIHR does the same for us. Science is done by people like myself,
If our industry treats us unfairly, we should speak up. Again my opinion, but we will not be doing the public justice by pretending that everything is fine while our house is burning down. We, as tax payers pay for scientific research
Time and time again the people that we elect to represent us have diverted that funding to what is "hot at the moment". Many scientist have had little choice but to follow the trend to keep their lab running. This is short-sighed, it means that basic scientist who
study mechanisms or things that are not fashionable are push to the side. The public loses when we do this, it means that we are responding, always playing catch-up when a new disease emerge, like COVID 19. How about we fund COVID research and continue to support other
research projects? How about we increase money into the science portfolio so that we can have a vibrant research community? how about we increase the funding success rate? In the absence of these steps the continual reshuffling of funding schedule makes it hard to have trust.
By all means, let's keep our investigators safe but, before you throw away months worth of work, please ask those that will be affected. I am reviewer, I would have been happy to participate in some way.. Let's agree that CIHR should have at least
consulted with those that would be affected.
