12. EWYRFYEUC
serves its purpose, not much else to say ab it
11. running out of time (8.5/10)
some moments on this song i really enjoy like the background harmony at 2:23, and the instrumental at 1:33. overall still a great song just one of the least memorable and emotional songs on the record
10. a boy is a gun
another track that i love just not as much as some others. i love this song lyrically and i think it’s crucial to the album’s narrative, but it ranks lower for me since it gets a bit stagnant approaching the end, but lyrically it’s very strong it could be-
argued that it adds to the effect of it being tyler just thinking out loud (8.5/10)
9. earfquake (9/10)
not the most lyrically complex song on the album, but tyler’s raw emotion comes through clearly on this track and is further shown through the music video which shows everything around him catching fire(how he feels losing this person)and cartis verse fits well
8. are we still friends (9.5/10)
not very impressive on its own, but as a closer to the story of igor it is a cinematic experience. since my first listen, 3:10 to the end has been a highlight for me. the chaotic and clashing nature of the instrumental captures tyler’s-
mental state perfectly as he has finally separated himself from this person causing him so much pain but is still clinging on to the hope of them staying in his life, coalescing to a scream at the end and fading into a synth chord that doesn’t resolve until-
the beginning of igors theme- symbolizing the cycle tyler has found himself in of love and heartbreak
7. i dont love you anymore (10/10)
tyler finally steps back on idlya and realizes his worth, saying “i won’t walk around with my head down like i got beat up” in the first half of this song, but this quickly turns into “moving on but how?” and he starts to doubt his choice and-
almost drowns amidst a sea of beautiful harmonies metaphorically representing his conflicted feelings that overwhelm him, until it’s eventually cut off by him reminding himself “i dont love you anymore”
6. igor’s theme (10/10)
great intro to a great album. beyond the symbolic interpretation of the initial synth, it serves to capture the audiences attention and direct it towards “igor”, most evident in how he performs it live. also 2:45 is insane.
5. puppet (10/10)
puppet features tyler at his most desperate, willing to do anything for this person after telling them “i don’t want to see you again” in a seemingly pivotal moment on a boy is a gun. he is loyal to a fault, taking one step forward and two steps back.-
the way the beat comes in smoothly and minimally on the first hook feels heavy and dragged, representing how tyler feels pulled by this person and the way he becomes a pushover when it comes to them, losing all ability to stick up for himself
4. gone gone/thank you (10/10)
tyler reminisces on the good times he had before the breakup in a youthful and nostalgic tone, but the hook comes in sharply, pleading “my loves gone”, and refers to his current state as “a dream i just can’t seem to wake up from”, which is-
reminiscent of how he describes what is assumed to be the same person on see you again, (“you live in my dream state” “i don’t wanna wake up”). what he thought was perfect has actually caused him heartbreak and now he wishes to wake from it. also on this track he begins toaccept-
that their time together has come to an end,it has some of the saddest lines imo”i just hope to god she got good taste, can put you on some shit you never seen”,”i hope you know she can’t compete with me”.the second half is even more hopeless, claiming he never wants to love again
3. i think (10/10)
tyler has found who he believes to be the love of his life.the production on this song has some of my favorite moments of the album such as:48 and the bridge among others. everything about this song from tyler’s vocals,to the features,to the beat work perfectly
2. what’s good (10/10)
this track combines some of his most unique and innovative production with emotionally dense lyrics and aggressive delivery that works together perfectly as a reaction to puppet. the way he says “i see the light” for some reason sticks with me,after puppet-
in which he loses all dignity and desperately attempts to reconcile this relationship. the instrumental is filled with beautiful beat switches and chord changes that make it one of my favorites. his “hahahaha” is another fav moment for me. could talk ab this one all day-
this song is essentially tyler telling anyone who’s ever doubted him that they’re wrong, including whoever igor is about, and his energy on this track is so inspiring to me
1. new magic wand (10/10)
potentially my favorite song tyler has ever made. in contrast to the previous tracks, tyler begins to experience, jealously, envy, anger, and insecurity over the presence of someone he perceives as a threat to his relationship and fantasizes about-
getting rid of both of them. beyond his anger though, there is a deep underlying sadness found in his repetition of “please don’t leave me now”at increasing levels at which you can hear him descend into a darker place until the next lines about wanting all of his love for himself
so many impactful lines on nmw, such as “i live life with no fear except for the idea that one day you won’t be here” and “i will not fetch the ball”, hard to briefly explain all that i love about this song, but hopefully that got some of it across.
i feel like my analysis always gets worse as i close in on my favorites because there’s too much to say so maybe i’ll start doing individual songs more in depth just for my absolute favorites
or i could actually plan before i start typing that might work too
