Two days ago, @JeremyLRedmon reported a staff member at Stewart tested positive for COVID-19. Apparently 33 detainees were placed in quarantine at the facility, and nine staff are self-quarantining from home. https://www.ajc.com/news/breaking-news/georgia-immigration-detention-employee-tests-positive-for-coronavirus/scDYEmROtOSowK2ULLPt5K/">https://www.ajc.com/news/brea...
Four Stewart detainees have died since 2017. I want to highlight Yulio Castro-Garrido& #39;s story, which may reveal the conditions at the facility and the ease of how an illness like COVID-19 can spread between detainees. https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/takeaway/segments/ice-records-ill-migrant-continued-working-ice-custody-died">https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/...
In 2018, 33-year-old Yulio was taken to Stewart. He died two months later of pneumonia, a lung infection and viral influenza, according to ICE records accessed by @ProjectSouth.
After reporting his illness to staff, he worked in the facility kitchen for food service duties under CoreCivic supervision, potentially transmitting his illness. He even worked in the kitchen *on the day* he was taken in an ambulance.
